An important component of family life in any culture is what kind of pets people own. One breed of dog that originated in the Basque Country is called the Basque Shepherd dog, also know as euskal artzain txakurra in Basque and perro de pastor vasco in Spanish. This highly active dog breed was developed over many years to help shepherds with cattle and sheep; in fact it is one of the oldest shepherd dog breeds. Usually these dogs have yellow fur and can have either rough or smooth coats. These dogs make a very loyal companion and are good for families with kids, but they need lots of space to exercise. The Basque Shepherd dog is a wonderful pet to train for obedience and agility competitions.

That’s a cute shepherd dog! How did you first hear about the breed? It’s always interesting to learn about new breeds of dogs and cats.

Adorable! It’s cool that they’re one of the oldest dog breeds in existence–this link says remains have been found from 12,000 years ago: http://www.dogbreedstandards.com/basque-shepherd-dog/ .
