Fashion In the Basque Country

On January 21, 1895 a fashion designer was born and would later create the household brand known as Balenciaga. This fashion designer happens to be the famous Cristobal Balenciaga. If you are even slightly familiar with high fashion then you probably have heard of the brand Balenciaga. Today, this brand is run by Isabelle Guichot who runs the headquarters for Balenciaga in Paris, France.

Cristobal Balenciaga was born in Guetaria, which is a region of the Basque Country. As a child, Cristobal spent many hours with his mother and was a seamstress. He later became a worker for Marquesa de Casa Torres in Madrid. Through his many years of working in the tailoring business, Cristobal became a well known in his hometown and decided to open up his own boutiques in Madrid, Barcelona, and San Sebastian. During the Spanish Civil War, Cristobal was forced o move his company outside of Spain, which is why the headquarters of Balenciaga in now in Paris, France.

While in Paris, Cristobal found much success and was able to have his very first runway in August 1937 at the Avenue George V atelier. His collection was based very heavily on the Spanish Renaissance. By 1939, Cristobal Balenciaga was praised in France for being a revolutionizing force in the fashion industry. Balenziaga’s designs were very unique and would stand out from the other high fashion designers such as Dior and Chanel. He favored fluid lines that altered how it fit to a woman’s body. With his many unique takes on women’s fashion, Balenciaga became one of the most important contributors to the fashion industry.

Through the 1960,s Balenciaga continued to shock and amaze the world with his innovate techniques on women fashion. Sadly, in 1968 Cristobal Balenciaga has to close his stores and he died a few years later on March 24, 1972. In 1986, Jacques Bogart S.A acquired the rights to the Balenciaga fashion house and would open the new ready to wear fashion line designed by Michel Goma in October 1987.

Though the fashion house is not owned and operated by the late Cristobal Balenciaga, the fashion house still stays true to Balenciaga’s famous designs and innovative take on women’s fashion. Balenciaga has grown to be one of the top fashion industry’s brand that is well known and respected. There are currently 8 Balenciaga stores within the U.S and hundreds within Europe and other parts of the world. Cristobal Balenciaga was not afraid to step outside of his comfort zone and create looks for women that are now iconic looks of the 21st century. Balenciaga will always be a fashion brand held in high regards due to the work Cristobal Balenciaga put into this household brand.

    I would love to see an exhibition of some of Cristobal Balenciaga’s fashion pieces in a museum, as well as some of his design sketches. I looked up some pictures of his work online, and there were several nice tailored suits and dresses that I would enjoy wearing. Many of the pictures, however, also featured billowy, puffy dresses that looked similar to cotton candy… those dresses might be a little too fashion forward for me! All one can see of the women is their faces!
